Road Safety

Road Safety is the main topic of this Newsletter.  As part of the school’s Travel Plan and because we are a Healthy School we encourage children to walk or cycle to school as much as possible.  However we have a few safety issues to bring to your attention.

Children Walking into School

Please ensure that you all use the footpaths and pavements when walking into school.  Do not cut across the school car park or walk in the road as this is dangerous, particularly in the mornings and afternoons when there is more traffic about.

Children Cycling into School

If you cycle into school please remember that you should take care to use the cycle paths and always wear your cycle helmet and high visibility vest or bands.  Anyone who needs a cycle helmet or High Viz vest may purchase one from the Road Safety Team at Time Square for a very reasonable price.

When you arrive on the school site please dismount from your cycle and push it to the cycle rack, this will help to avoid accidents on the playgrounds during the busy morning and afternoon periods.  Please make sure you have a bike lock with you to secure your cycle when leaving it on the bike stands.

Cycling Proficiency

We would love to run a Cycling Proficiency Course for the children next year.  However in order to do so we will need some parents to volunteer to train as cycling instructors; we will need at least six instructors to make running a course viable for Year 5.  If you would like to help and would appreciate further information please either speak to me or contact the Road Safety Team on 01344 351212.

    No Parking on School Site

As part of the ongoing theme of Road Safety I would like to remind parents that cars are not to be driven onto the school site.  Only parents with a special parking permit are allowed to drive onto site to drop off or collect their children.

    Water Bottles

As we approach the summer term the children will more than ever need to have a water bottle with them in school.  Please send your child to school with a clear plastic water bottle with a sports nozzle, marked with their name and class, which they may keep with them in their class rooms and refill at school.  Thank you.

Stair Gates

The Rowans Children’s Centre has asked us to make an appeal for old stair gates.  If you have one of these at home you no longer use, please bring it in and drop it off to the Rowans Centre office.  They will then pass these on to other parents who need them.  Thank you.

Local PCSO In School

Our PCSO Joanna Hughes will be in school on a regular basis.  She has been listening to children read and answering their questions about working with the Police.  Please say, “Hello” to her when you see her going about her duties in the local area.

Treasure Island !

The children thoroughly enjoyed all the fun of the theatre in school when we were visited by M&M Productions, who gave a performance of Treasure Island to the whole school last week.  There was plenty of excitement on the high seas with pirates and treasure in abundance!

Annual Reports

Children will be bringing home their Annual Report for parents tomorrow.  If you feel you need to speak to your child’s teacher about any concerns arising from the report there will be an informal Parents’ Evening on 1 April.  However the main Parents’ Evening will be held next term when teachers will have more time to discuss your child’s progress with you.

Absence from School

I would like to remind parents that all absence from school should be reported to the school office by telephone on the first day of absence.  The school will always contact you on the same day if you forget to call.  If we do not receive a reply from you either by telephone or in writing when your child returns to school then I’m afraid your child’s absence will be marked as unauthorised.  The same will apply for any holiday taken without previously applying for it.  Forms requesting absence from school are available from the school office.

    Easter Assembly

I would like to invite parents to join us for our end of term assembly on Friday, 3 April at 9.00am in the school hall when the children will be celebrating spring in various ways.

End of Term

As usual the children are invited to bring in a toy to play with on the last day of term.  School closes at 2.00pm so please remember to collect your child early on that day!  We return to school on Monday, 20 April.  I wish you all a restful Easter break.
